Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt has praised the border controls Poland has begun with Germany and Lithuania. These are "an important step in the joint action against illegal migration - a step that we expressly welcome", the CSU politician said in the evening.
The Polish and German governments acted in close coordination, said Dobrindt. He cited the arrest of a suspected smuggler by Polish officials on the border with Lithuania as an example of initial successes "in the fight against smuggling gangs". The Federal Minister of the Interior once again emphasized that border controls were a temporary measure, "but currently necessary to reorganize migration".
The centre-left government in Warsaw ordered the controls in response to German border controls. Germany has been carrying out random checks at the border with Poland since October 2023 to stop irregular migration.
