Dresden is reopening one of its landmarks to visitors after twelve years: from July 1, it will once again be possible to view the city center from the town hall tower, according to the city administration. Initially, there will be a test operation until October 31.
The building had been closed to visitors since 2013 due to a lack of escape routes. A concept has now been developed by the authorities and the fire department to make the tower accessible again.
Dresden City Hall was opened in 1910 after five years of construction. It was badly damaged during the bombing raids in February 1945 and was rebuilt until the early 1950s. The town hall tower is almost exactly 100 meters high, with the viewing platform at a height of almost 70 meters.
The top is formed by the "Golden Town Hall Man" - an approximately five-meter-high figure covered in gold leaf. It symbolizes Hercules with a horn of plenty, pointing out the beauties of the city on the Elbe with a raised hand. Including the figure, the town hall tower is the highest tower in the city center.
