Elisabeth Kaiser from Thuringia will be the new federal government's Commissioner for Eastern Europe. This was announced by the SPD executive committee. Kaiser has been Parliamentary State Secretary in the Ministry of Construction since 2023 and has been a member of the Bundestag for the Gera - Greiz - Altenburger Land constituency since 2017.
Kaiser succeeds Carsten Schneider, who will become Environment Minister in the new cabinet. Unlike Schneider, who was based in the Chancellery, Kaiser will work in the Ministry of Finance. The 38-year-old was born in Gera, is married, has a daughter and a stepson.
