Series production of a new generation of traction batteries for the all-electric Mercedes-Benz CLA has started at Accumotive in Kamenz. The plant is considered a competence center in the global battery production network of Mercedes-Benz and is a subsidiary of the Group. From 2026, Accumotive plans to expand its production portfolio to include the reconditioning of used batteries, which will then be used as spare parts, Mercedes-Benz announced.
Factory contributes to international competitiveness
"We must remain at the forefront of technology so that our automotive industry can benefit as much as possible from the mobility transition. With its latest battery generation, Accumotive is proving that long ranges for the all-electric CLA are possible without any problems," said Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU). The plant in Kamenz makes an important contribution to the international competitiveness of Mercedes-Benz and at the same time strengthens the economy in Lusatia.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the new battery generation significantly shortens the charging time. Energy for a range of up to 325 kilometers can be recharged in just ten minutes. Overall, the CLA 250+ achieves a maximum range of up to 792 kilometers. The batteries are manufactured on a production line around 350 meters long.
Old batteries to be reused in second-life storage systems
In addition to the reuse of batteries as spare parts, Mercedes-Benz has also stated that it is looking to reuse them. The subsidiary Mercedes-Benz Energy, based in Großröhrsdorf, Saxony, has established a successful business model with large-scale stationary storage applications. Batteries that can no longer be used in a vehicle can continue to be used in a second-life storage system. At the end of a battery's life, material recycling is the key to closing the material cycle.
