A survey has shown that the majority of Berliners are critical of a possible Olympic Games in the capital. In the survey commissioned by the "Berliner Morgenpost" newspaper, 56 percent of respondents said they had a very negative (43 percent) or somewhat negative (13 percent) view of Berlin's bid to host the Summer Olympics.
Under the motto "Berlin+", the capital wants to bring the Olympics to Germany together with four other federal states as part of a national bid. Munich, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia with the Rhine and Ruhr region are also bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"NOlympia Berlin" wants to prevent the bid
The final decision on the German bid is to be made by fall 2026 and then approved by the members of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. It is still unclear whether the bid will be for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Games. The "NOlympia Berlin" initiative wants to prevent an Olympic Games in the capital and has announced a referendum.
According to the survey, supporters of a Berlin bid are clearly in the minority. Only 32 percent of respondents would rate it very positively (19 percent) or somewhat positively (13 percent). 12 percent were undecided.
For the representative survey, the opinion research institute Civey interviewed 1,506 Berliners aged 18 and over from May 27 to June 10.
