The nomination of former “Tagesschau” anchor Constantin Schreiber to the Federal Assembly is causing a rift within the BSW. “We view this nomination critically,” according to a statement by BSW party leaders Fabio De Masi and Amira Mohamed Ali. “Schreiber has since made it clear himself that he does not share key BSW positions on the Middle East, the war in Ukraine, and economic policy.” For this reason, the nomination is not convincing. The BSW caucus in the Saxon state parliament has nominated the 47-year-old for the Federal Assembly. The body will elect the next Federal President on January 30. Following the nomination, Schreiber distanced himself from the BSW’s policy positions and announced that he intends to put forward his own candidate for the office of Federal President. Ronny Kupke, the BSW parliamentary group leader in Saxony, justified the nomination by stating that the Federal Assembly is also about reflecting a diversity of opinions. Schreiber confronts social conflicts and does not shy away from controversial debates. De Masi and Mohamed Ali countered that diversity of opinion does not mean arbitrariness. “Of course, we continue to stand firmly by our criticism of the genocide in Gaza and the federal government’s complicity through its arms deliveries.” Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
