Despite falling behind early, RB Leipzig celebrated another dominant home victory against FC Augsburg. Thanks to an energetic performance, coach Martín Demichelis’s team won 5–2 (3–1) and celebrated their fifth consecutive Bundesliga home victory, with a goal differential of 23–2. FCA, on the other hand, has not won in seven games. Anton Kade (1st minute) put the visitors ahead before Ezechiel Banzuzi (34th) and Christopher Nkunku (35th) turned the game around in just two minutes. David Raum (45’+1), Romulo (60’), and Christoph Baumgartner (66’) added to the lead in front of 38,292 spectators. Augsburg pulled one back through Uchenna Ogundu (90’+3). Leipzig’s top scorer, Antonio Nusa, didn’t make the starting lineup. The Norwegian had to leave the field early due to muscle problems during the 2-3 loss to Manchester City in the Champions League. Christoph Baumgartner was also rested at the start, with Tidiam Gomis and Nkunku starting in his place. For Augsburg, Manuel Baum—who served as sporting director at RB’s youth academy for two years starting in the summer of 2023—made only one change up front: Rodrigo Ribeiro was chosen over Michael Gregoritsch. The Swabians are something of a favorite opponent; they’ve never won in Leipzig. Coach Baum’s only point against them came in March 2019. Most recently, RB has won nine of the last ten matchups. The match got off to a bitter start, especially for Willi Orban, who was celebrating his 400th official match for RB. After 40 seconds, his header hit Arijon Ibrahimovic’s body; Maarten Vandevoordt was able to stop Ibrahimovic’s low shot—but not Kade’s follow-up. It was Leipzig’s first goal conceded at home in the league after a run of 18 consecutive clean sheets. Then Leipzig turned up the heat with a lot of fire in their bellies. Augsburg had some counterattacking opportunities; a shot by Ribeiro (7th minute) even bounced around inside the RB goal—but he was offside. Then David Raum (19th min.) briefly knocked out FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen with a powerful shot straight to the face—play resumed after medical attention. The Saxons kept pressing, but the Augsburg side defended cleverly at first, shifting their formation well. RB posed the greatest threat through Brajan Gruda, who was the only RB player called up to the DFB squad by Jürgen Klopp. He set up Banzuzi nicely, who scored the equalizer with a low shot from 20 meters. Shortly afterward, Nkunku volleyed in a cross from Gruda to make it 2–1, before Raum curled a free kick directly into the corner just before halftime. This marked the sixth time this season that Augsburg had squandered a 1-0 lead. After the break, Vandevoordt (50') made a header save to prevent the visitors from scoring off a shot by Kade. Leipzig then ran rings around the FCA defense—Romulo simply had to tap the ball in to make it 4–1. Just seconds after the duo came on as substitutes, Nusa set up Baumgartner, who hammered the ball into the near corner. Augsburg could only manage to pull one back. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
