Journalist and former “Tagesschau” anchor Constantin Schreiber, as Saxony’s representative in the Federal Assembly, intends to put forward his own candidate for the office of Federal President. “I don’t want to simply choose between the candidates that the parties will somehow present to us,” Schreiber announced. “I want to look for a person myself who might actually deserve this office.” Schreiber said he intends to exercise this right as an elector. The 47-year-old was nominated for the Federal Assembly by the BSW parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament. On January 30, the Federal Assembly will elect a new person to the highest office in the land. According to information from the German Press Agency (DPA) citing several high-ranking sources within the Union, CDU leader Friedrich Merz intends to propose Bavarian State Parliament President Ilse Aigner (CSU) to the CDU leadership bodies, which are meeting in Berlin on Sunday and Monday. Schreiber said the office is not “political early retirement at Bellevue Palace; it is not the final promotion for someone whose career would otherwise likely be over.” At the same time, the journalist distanced himself from the BSW, which is sending him to the Federal Assembly. “You don’t have to be a political scientist to see that there are significant differences between my political convictions and those of the BSW—or rather, that there is no overlap at all.” As examples, he cited the positions on Israel, Russia, and economic policy. Nevertheless, Schreiber added, he would accept his nomination. A democracy thrives on people with different opinions being willing to talk to one another. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
