Leipzig marks new cycle lane on Augustusplatz to avoid conflicts and promote cycling. Completion planned by May 27.

From the middle of next week, the city will be marking another section of the cycle lane along the Promenadenring over a distance of around 170 meters. Specifically, this involves the area from Augustusplatz on the inner ring road along the Gewandhaus to the junction with Lenné-Anlage. Cyclists coming from the direction of the main station or Johannisplatz will then be able to cycle past the Gewandhaus to the east. They will no longer have to cycle across Augustusplatz and past the Moritzbastei in the direction of Schillerstraße. At the bottleneck between the cultural center and the City-Hochhaus - Kurt-Masur-Platz - there are always conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists, and the new traffic routing is intended to remedy this.

One of the three lanes of motor vehicle traffic will be withdrawn for the new cycle lane. Currently, cars coming from the directions of Grimmaischer Steinweg and Georgiring only use two lanes each, which will also be continued. The new traffic routing is therefore not expected to cause any restrictions for motorists, as the turning lane into the city center will be retained.

In order to draw more attention to cyclists and to visually separate the new cycle traffic facility from the lanes reserved purely for car traffic, the asphalt will be coloured "traffic green". This has already proved successful on other sections of the Promenadenring. Before the pure marking work, the connections were first structurally adapted in the past few days and the road surface in the section was repaired.

The construction work will cost a total of around 100,000 euros and should be completed by 27 May. However, this depends on the weather: Dry weather and continued mild temperatures are required for professional work with the green friction plastic.

An extension of the new cycle lane in the direction of Neues Rathaus is planned, but first the existing traffic lights in front of Universitätsstraße need to be extensively reprogrammed. There is currently a shared footpath and cycle path along the Lenné-Anlage, which connects to the new cycle lane.

After a ruling by the Higher Administrative Court, a section of the Promenadenring was reopened to cycle traffic in 2021 for the first time since 1975. This is also a building block in the implementation of the Mobility Strategy 2030 adopted by the city council. Further information: www.leipzig.de/radfahren-promenadenring
