Listeria can cause serious illness. The pathogen was found in four varieties of soft cheese, which are now being recalled.

The Swiss cheese manufacturer Eberle Spezialitäten is recalling four varieties of soft cheese due to contamination with Listeria bacteria. The “Mini Brie” in the flavors nut, chives, chili, and truffle was sold in Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saxony through various retail outlets, according to Heiderbeck, the distribution company based in Olching near Munich.

Listeria infections can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. The bacteria can cause, among other things, blood poisoning as well as inflammation of the brain and meninges. In addition, unborn children may be harmed, even if the expectant mother does not experience any symptoms. The recall was announced via the “Lebensmittelwarnung” app.
