Hertha BSC have extended the contract with top scorer and fan favorite Fabian Reese ahead of schedule. As the Berlin second division club announced on Thursday, the 26-year-old has signed a new contract until 2028. Reese's contract previously ran until 2026. Reese joined Hertha last summer from Holstein Kiel and immediately impressed with exceptionally good performances.
With ten goals and 14 assists, the speedy winger is not only Hertha's most successful player, but also one of the best players in the second division. Reese had to take a break from mid-December to the end of January due to poor blood values following a coronavirus infection.
"We know how valuable Fabi is: He is an absolute key player for us, always leading the way on and off the pitch with his infectious nature. He also fully identifies with Hertha BSC, our values and our philosophy," said Hertha's sporting director Benjamin Weber. "I want to set an example with the contract extension. I believe in the success and goals of our club and want to return with Hertha BSC to where the club belongs: in the Bundesliga," Reese was quoted as saying in the press release.
However, the signing is no guarantee that the attacking player will remain in Berlin. Financially strapped Hertha could be reliant on transfer income in the summer. Reese has also attracted the attention of Bundesliga clubs with his performances. Whether the contract includes an exit clause was not disclosed.
