FC Schalke 04 secured a hard-fought victory at newly promoted second division side Dynamo Dresden. Thanks to a penalty converted by captain Kenan Karaman (84th minute), the Royal Blues won 1:0 (0:0) and climbed to second place in the 2nd Bundesliga. Dynamo dropped to 13th place after their third defeat of the season in front of 31,707 spectators at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion.
Dynamo's Daferner back - Schalke's Sylla not in the squad
Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm promoted Christoph Daferner to the starting eleven after recovering from a hand injury, but had to bring on Jonas Oehmichen at short notice for the injured Nils Fröling. Schalke's Miron Muslic made three changes, bringing on Janik Bachmann, Emil Höjlund and Finn Porath. As expected, goal scorer Moussa Sylla was not in the squad.
Daferner (2) had the lead on his feet from seven meters, but was denied by the brilliant reaction of Loris Karius. The Royal Blues had their first real chance to score in the 28th minute with a long-range shot from Vitalie Becker.
Keeper Karius prevents them from going behind
Both teams fought a battle of attrition in midfield. After a sharp cross from Kofi Amoako, Daferner (36) failed to beat Schalke keeper Karius from three meters. After the changeover, Schalke increasingly took the initiative. However, it was often only long-range shots that posed a threat - such as Bachmann's (74').
Kutschke then headed Dynamo into the lead (77'), but the referees rightly ruled the ball offside. At the other end, Amaoko fouled Schalke captain Karaman in the penalty area. The referee looked at it again on the screen and awarded a penalty, which Karaman safely converted himself (84').
