Dynamo's Daferner could have been the match-winner on his comeback from injury. But Schalke keeper Karius prevented that. Karaman scored the winner from the spot.

Second division promoted Dynamo Dresden are still waiting for their first home win. Despite a strong performance, the Elbe club lost 1-0 (0-0) against FC Schalke 04. Kenan Karaman scored the goal of the day from the penalty spot in the 84th minute in front of 31,707 spectators at the Rudolf Harbig Stadium. Dynamo dropped to 13th place after their third defeat of the season. Schalke climbed to second place after four matchdays.

While Dynamo coach Thomas Stamm promoted Christoph Daferner to the starting eleven after recovering from a hand injury, he had to make a change after the warm-up and bring on Jonas Oehmichen for the injured Nils Fröling. Schalke's Miron Muslic made three changes. Janik Bachmann, Emil Höjlund and Finn Porath started in place of Adrian Gantenbein and Christopher Antwi-Adjei as well as Moussa Sylla (not in the squad).

New signing Pauli already in the Dynamo squad

The Elbe club, who immediately included central defender Julian Pauli from 1. FC Köln, got off to a furious start: Daferner was able to open the scoring from seven meters after two minutes, but was denied by the brilliant reaction of Loris Karius. The Royal Blues had their first real chance to score in the 28th minute with a long-range shot from Vitalie Becker, but Dynamo keeper Tim Schreiber cleared for a corner.

Keeper Karius prevents them from going behind

Both teams fought a battle of attrition in midfield. Despite good transition play, there was a lack of accuracy, especially in the final third. After a sharp cross from Kofi Amoako, Daferner (36) failed to beat Schalke keeper Karius from three meters. At the other end, Kenan Karaman (39) missed from the edge of the box.

After the changeover, Schalke took more initiative with Christopher Antwi-Adjei fresh on the pitch. However, there was a lack of creativity. After an hour, Stamm also brought new attacking impetus, bringing on Stefan Kutschke and Dominik Kother. For the visitors, it was often only shots from distance that posed a threat. As was the case with Bachmann (74'), Dynamo's Schreiber had no trouble with the ball.

Kutschke then headed Dynamo into the lead (77'), but the referees ruled it offside. The VAR official confirms the decision. At the other end, Amaoko fouls Schalke captain Karaman in the penalty area. The referee looks at it again on the screen and awards a penalty, which Karaman safely converts himself (84').
