Leipzig must go to Cottbus - Magdeburg with luck of the draw

RB Leipzig face a heated East German clash in the second round of the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga club must face third-division side Energie Cottbus. The last time Leipzig won the prestigious competition was in 2023.

"An away game in Cottbus is a real challenge. Energie have a good team and, with the fans behind them, will do everything they can to make life difficult for us. That's what makes the cup so exciting. We are aware of the task and will be highly focused in order to prevail in this atmosphere and reach the next round," said sporting director Marcel Schäfer.

Magdeburg face regional league side

Second-division side 1. FC Magdeburg also had a supposedly easy draw and will face regional league side FV Illertissen. However, SCM, who had little trouble in their 3:1 win over Saarbrücken, should be warned. Illertissen caused a surprise in the first round with a sensational win over 1. FC Nürnberg.

The second round is scheduled for October 28 and 29. The round of 16 will follow at the beginning of December. The final in Berlin's Olympic Stadium will take place on May 23, 2026.
