The Saxon SPD has nominated Saxony's Social Affairs Minister Petra Köpping for election as the party's deputy national chairwoman. At the state party conference in Dresden, the 66-year-old - deputy to head of government Michael Kretschmer (CDU) in the Saxon cabinet - was unanimously nominated. "I want to be a strong voice for Saxony and for East Germany," said the politician. "I want us to treat each other as equals and as equals." Köpping explained that all of the eastern German states had been consulted. One member from each of these federal states will run for the party executive.
The SPD will be holding its federal party conference in Berlin from June 27 to 29. The agenda includes the election of the chairperson and their five deputies.
