The ski resort on the Fichtelberg, including the historic suspension railroad, is coming into private hands. What is behind the sale?

Saxony's largest alpine ski resort on the Fichtelberg, including the historic cable car, is going to a private investor. The Oberwiesenthal town council voted in favor of the contract for the sale on Tuesday evening. The price was set at 10.4 million euros according to an external expert opinion. In mid-August, the previously municipal Fichtelberg Schwebebahn will be transferred to the Oberwiesenthal Lift Company (LGO). It is the second lift operator on Saxony's highest mountain.

Mayor Jens Benedict (non-party) hopes that the sale will lead to the urgently needed modernization of the ski resort - in particular the construction of a new lift system on the Himmelsleiter descent. The building permit for this is due to expire at the end of the year, so time is of the essence.
