At a summit, representatives from politics, local governments, and social work will discuss how to combat loneliness. “Loneliness is a serious social challenge. It can affect people at different stages of life and in various circumstances and is not solely a matter of age or personal circumstances,” said Saxony’s Minister of Social Affairs, Petra Köpping (SPD), ahead of the event. Saxony already has numerous dedicated organizations and opportunities for social interaction, according to Köpping. The key is that these resources are well-known and actually reach people. The first Erzgebirge Loneliness Summit was initiated by SPD state parliament member Simone Lang, the AWO Erzgebirge, and the city of Oelsnitz. The motto: “Together Against Loneliness—Facilitating Connections, Strengthening Cohesion.” The focus is on better connecting existing initiatives and finding solutions to make support services more accessible. This is because people who feel lonely do not necessarily find their way to a community center or counseling center on their own, organizers noted. In addition to expert input, the event will focus on fostering dialogue among participants and developing concrete ideas for better collaboration in the region. The discussion will focus in particular on loneliness among children and adolescents, the participation of older adults, and the importance of volunteer work. According to Simone Lang, the Loneliness Summit is set to continue. Future meetings could address topics such as digitalization, infrastructure, and culture. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de).
