The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) in the Saxon state parliament is demanding clarity from virologist Christian Drosten about decisions in the coronavirus pandemic. The 52-year-old professor is a witness in the parliamentary committee of inquiry on Friday.
The citizens have a right to know which measures really helped and which perhaps did not, said BSW committee member Ines Biebrach. Drosten was one of the government's most important advisors: "We expect him to provide clear information on how evidence-based the recommendations were and whether there were misconceptions during the course of the pandemic."
"It must be made transparent where science really had reliable findings and where politicians may have made decisions based on uncertain data," added Biebrach's colleague Jens Hentschel-Thöricht. Possible wrong decisions and their consequences for children and young people, for example, should not be swept under the carpet.
"At the end of this question-and-answer game, we must be able to assess what was right or wrong," said Biebrach. Drosten's hearing was a key element of this clarification.
The committee of inquiry was set up at the instigation of the AfD parliamentary group. It is to examine the work of the Saxon government in connection with the coronavirus in the period from 2019 to 2024. According to the Ministry of Social Affairs, around 17,750 people have died as a result of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic in Saxony in March 2020.
