The German government's representative for Poland, Knut Abraham, believes that Germany needs to provide more support for its neighboring country in protecting the EU's external borders. The CDU member of the Bundestag told the Nordkurier newspaper that it is important to look beyond border controls and examine what is in the common interest to reduce migration. "In other words, looking at how Germany can support Poland's external border protection vis-à-vis Ukraine, Belarus and Russia." If desired, Germany could also support Poland in protecting the Baltic Sea or critical infrastructure.
Polish border guards have been monitoring the border with Germany and Lithuania since Monday. Germany has been carrying out random checks at the border with Poland since October 2023 in order to stop irregular migration. In May, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) ordered more intensive border controls. Poland is now responding to this. The Polish commissioner called for practicable solutions. "Of course, we need to talk about more lanes and joint controls so that we don't fall back into a daily routine full of border congestion." Abraham is Germany's former deputy ambassador to Poland.
