Experience the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra for free in the open air: This is possible in Leipzig. Tens of thousands of people listened to the melodies of "Waltz King" Strauss in the park at the weekend.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra's two open-air concerts attracted around 60,000 people at the weekend. Under the direction of conductor Franz Welser-Möst, the orchestra presented a serenade for the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss on the 200th anniversary of his birth on Friday and Saturday in the Rosental, according to Gewandhaus spokesman Dirk Steiner.

With free admission, the guests were treated to a selection of rarely performed waltzes, polkas and Csárdás melodies. The concerts took place under the motto "Klassik airleben", the event has been taking place since 2006.
