FSV Mainz 05 are looking forward to the long-distance duel with RB Leipzig for qualification for the Conference League. "This is a big day for us. We've trained for a whole year, we've done everything for a whole year," said coach Bo Henriksen ahead of the home game on the final matchday of the Bundesliga against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (3.30pm/Sky).
Given their six-goal advantage over Leipzig, who are level on points, FSV will most likely only need a narrow victory to reach the European Cup for the first time in nine years.
"It's a dream come true for us to be able to play this game," said Henriksen ahead of the clash with Leverkusen. With a big win and a defeat for Borussia Dortmund against Holstein Kiel, even Europa League qualification is still possible.
Interim results from Leipzig? "Not important for us"
Henriksen doesn't want to know much about interim results from Leipzig's game against VfB Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon. He obviously assumes that RB will win the game. "This result is not important for us," said the Danish coach. The important thing is to win your own game against Leverkusen.
Like Stuttgart, Leverkusen have nothing left to play for in this Bundesliga season. Ahead of the last game under coach Xabi Alonso, Bayer are confirmed as runners-up. Nevertheless, Henriksen naturally warns against the double winners of the previous season. "They're a good team. They have very, very good players." But he is not afraid of Leverkusen.
The 50-year-old is just as unafraid that several players could leave FSV if they miss out on the European Cup. "I'm not afraid because I have a very, very good sporting director and a very, very good club board," said Henriksen. He was referring to sporting director Niko Bungert and sporting director Christian Heidel.
