RB Leipzig had no trouble against Eintracht Trier in the cup. They kick off the Bundesliga season with a home game on Saturday. Coach Demichelis is asked about a possible return.

Martín Demichelis and RB Leipzig will have to wait a bit longer for their first truly challenging competitive match. Fourth-division side Eintracht Trier simply wasn’t strong enough in the first round of the DFB Cup. The 6-0 victory—a result befitting the Champions League participant from Saxony—nevertheless boosts confidence and sets the team up positively for the Bundesliga opener.

“We’re happy,” said forward Brajan Gruda. “Especially after this game here, we’re heading into it with a good feeling. We just want to keep going.” Borussia Mönchengladbach will be the first league opponent this coming Saturday. And although the team from the Lower Rhine is in a different league than Trier, RB can take a lot from the match at the Moselstadion back to its own arena.

Gruda plays strongly

RB was wide awake from the start and didn’t need any time to warm up. The Leipzig team put the regional league side under pressure right away and pressed Trier early on. “The coach told us to approach the game with respect,” said Gruda. “In these games, there’s a danger that, as favorites, we’ll think it’ll be easy. That’s dangerous.”

Demichelis demanded discipline, Gruda explained. He got that, for the most part. RB held their ground defensively, even during counterattacks, and went into tackles decisively. “It was a solid game from start to finish,” said Demichelis with satisfaction.

Up front, Leipzig impressed with some attractive teamwork and individual flair. Gruda, in particular, stood out. The 22-year-old made his mark as both a goal-scorer and an assist provider. “I really liked what I saw from him,” said Demichelis.

Six different goal scorers

He was also likely pleased with his players’ physical condition and the depth of his roster. “The best part is that many are in top shape, that we can play comfortably for 90 minutes, and that we’re intense,” Gruda noted. Demichelis was able to make high-quality substitutions and give some of the pros playing time.

“We need rhythm,” said the former Bayern player. “For many players, today was important for getting into a better rhythm.” Also noteworthy: All six of Leipzig’s goals were scored by different players.

What’s going on with Nkunku?

Demichelis would certainly still be happy to have a new attacking player to replace Yan Diomande, who has moved to Real Madrid. The Argentine declined to comment on speculation surrounding a possible return by Christopher Nkunku. “I can’t talk about hypothetical situations,” said the 45-year-old. “He’s a good player. But my job is to coach the players who are here. I’m very satisfied with the roster.”

Nkunku is currently under contract with AC Milan. The 28-year-old played for Leipzig from 2019 to 2023. In the Bundesliga, he scored 47 goals in 119 games. “We still have a few days left,” said Demichelis, referring to the transfer window. “We’ll see what happens. Things can happen on both sides. Players can leave the club, and players can join.”
