SC DHfK Leipzig and coach Runar Sigtryggsson are going their separate ways with immediate effect. "After a thorough analysis of the current situation and with a view to our ambitious goals, we have decided to make a new start in the head coach position," said DHfK Managing Director Karsten Günther in a club statement. "We want to bring fresh energy and new impetus to the team and set it up in the medium term so that we are once again a serious candidate for a single-digit place in the table."
After the weakest season in the German Handball Bundesliga, the separation is now a done deal, although the Icelander still has a contract until summer 2026. Although coach Sigtryggsson had to compensate for numerous setbacks such as the protracted absence of Matěj Klíma, the departure of Viggó Kristjánsson and the injuries to Franz Semper and Simon Ernst, only seven points and two home wins in the second half of the season as well as several clear defeats, including the lifeless performance against Bietigheim, showed a clear trend in the team's development, according to the statement.
Rumors surrounding Krickau
The club wants to take the necessary time in its search for a new head coach. "We have developed a clear profile and are trying to find the best possible candidate and get him excited about our path in Leipzig," said Günther. Recently, there have been increasing rumors that Nicolej Krickau could come to Leipzig. The 38-year-old was in charge of SG Flensburg-Handewitt until December, but was released there.
