The Saxon Greens want to set the course for the future at a party conference in Neukieritzsch near Leipzig this evening. The election of the new dual leadership is on the agenda on Saturday. Three women and two men are standing for election. Former Environment and Agriculture Minister Wolfram Günther is considered a promising candidate. Former State Secretary of Justice Gesine Märtens is also running for the women's seat.
The former dual leadership with Christin Furtenbacher and Marie Müser will not be standing again. Furtenbacher resigned in December 2024. Since then, Müser has led the party alone. Only Martin Helbig from the current Executive Board is entering the race again. Like Günther, he is running for the chairmanship. The other two candidates are Coretta Storz and Nathalie Senf. The election is scheduled for Saturday morning.
Beforehand, the 120 delegates will deal with motions. In an urgent motion, the Saxon Greens want to declare their support for an AfD ban. The state executive board's key motion revolves around a sustainable financial policy and calls for, among other things, a reform of the debt brake in order to be able to take out loans for investments. The guest at the party conference on Saturday will be national chairman Felix Banaszak.
The Greens in Saxony currently have just under 5,300 members. The party only received 5.1 percent of the vote in the state elections. It was not enough to secure further government participation in the previous coalition with the CDU and SPD.
