In Saxony, the pumpkin harvest has begun. According to the State Statistical Office, the area under cultivation of the popular fruiting vegetable is fluctuating, but the trend is upward. Last year, 53.5 hectares of edible pumpkins were grown in the Free State, it said. 72 fruit and vegetable farmers cultivated pumpkins on their fields. Ten years before the cultivation surface in Saxonia still with 13,1 hectares had lain.

Measured at the country wide cultivation surface Saxonia is rather a small pumpkin country. According to the Federal Statistical Office, pumpkins grew on a good 4820 hectares throughout Germany in 2022. According to the report, about 2000 farms were engaged in the cultivation of edible pumpkins, which include Hokkaido, butternut or giant pumpkins.
