The AfD won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt by a wide margin. Could this have implications for the economy? Kaiser, the Commissioner for Eastern Germany, comments on the matter.

Elisabeth Kaiser, the Federal Government Commissioner for Eastern Germany, believes that the AfD’s election victory in Saxony-Anhalt could have negative consequences for the economy. For eastern Germany’s economy to continue growing, investments from both domestic and foreign sources, as well as a well-educated workforce, are necessary, Kaiser said at the East German Entrepreneurs’ Day in Potsdam, according to her prepared remarks. However, this requires a stable political environment.

“If a party that so radically questions our democracy and the European single market becomes the strongest force, that deters investors,” Kaiser said, according to her prepared remarks. “All the more so, this party’s blatantly xenophobic rhetoric is no invitation to workers from abroad.”

The AfD won Sunday’s state election in Saxony-Anhalt by a wide margin but fell short of an absolute majority. AfD lead candidate Ulrich Siegmund is nevertheless aiming for a stable majority.

Kaiser Believes Politicians and Businesses Have a Duty

The task for the parties of the democratic center is to prove that the transition toward greater climate protection will be structured in a way that benefits the people of eastern Germany. East German business leaders also have a duty to take a clear stance and speak out clearly: “Racism and xenophobia have no place in our workplaces or on our streets,” said Kaiser. A new state parliament will be elected in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 20.

According to the SPD politician, the eastern German states have a strong industrial base, outstanding universities and research institutions, and internationally successful companies. However, to ensure long-term success, private investment must be mobilized more effectively. That is why reducing bureaucracy, speeding up approval processes, and increasing digitization are necessary.
