German-Sorbian Folk Theater Aims to Be a Stage for Diversity

The German-Sorbian People's Theater in Bautzen has announced about 20 premieres for the new season. In addition to classics such as Friedrich Schiller’s “Intrigue and Love” and the operas “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and “Nabucco” by Giuseppe Verdi, the program also features fairy tales (“Little Muck,” “Puss in Boots”), puppet shows, comedies, and dance theater, as the theater announced.

Theater as a “Place of the Heart”

According to Artistic Director Lutz Hillmann, the season is entirely dedicated to “diversity, home, and an open view of the world.” The theater looks back on an extremely successful season. The audience’s support and loyalty are its greatest assets. “They show that this theater is not just a place of art, but a place of the heart. And that is exactly what we want to be: your city theater of the heart.” With passion and dedication, the theater aims to tell stories that move people and are rooted in the region.

Volkstheater does not want to lose sight of the horizon

According to Hillmann, the goal is also to bring European and international literature to the stage. “Because we never lose sight of the bigger picture, even as we stand firmly in the here and now. In these strange times, when money is abundant for some things but scarce for others, the financial situation for culture remains challenging.” They want to justify this by highlighting what makes the German-Sorbian Folk Theater strong—“a loyal, large audience that wants to experience plays, puppet shows, concerts, readings, and music—in both German and Sorbian.”

Theater Festival Kicks Off on Sunday

The season opens this Sunday with a theater festival taking place throughout the Burgtheater. The ensemble will then present an overview of the season with short theatrical previews, readings at special locations, and meet-and-greets with actors and puppeteers.
