Porsche cuts back production in Leipzig
Porsche is reducing production at its Leipzig plant due to falling sales figures. From the summer, body construction of the Macan will be switched to one shift. Other areas such as assembly and the paint shop will follow in the fall with a reduction from three to two shifts.
Temporary workers are particularly affected - their numbers are to be reduced significantly. The core workforce will remain untouched, but changes to teams and the distribution of tasks have been announced.
The adjustment is part of a larger cost-cutting course: 1,900 jobs are to be cut across the Group by 2029; according to Porsche, Leipzig will initially be spared. Nevertheless, uncertainty is growing. Reasons include weak demand in China, rising costs due to electromobility and new US tariffs.
One possible glimmer of hope: Porsche is planning a new SUV model with combustion and hybrid drive - Leipzig is considered a potential production site. This will be necessary as the popular Macan with combustion engine will disappear from the market in 2026.
