Blue-green algae has been detected in the Quitzdorf reservoir in Upper Lusatia. The health department of the district of Görlitz therefore warns against swimming in the water. This applies in particular to sensitive or endangered people, as well as infants and children. Dogs and other warm-blooded animals are also at risk. The results of a water sample taken on June 12 showed that there is currently a strong development of blue-green algae.
Blue-green algae mainly occurs in stagnant water during the summer months when water temperatures are high. A bluish-greenish turbidity of the water and the formation of streaks are signs of the presence of the bacteria.
In addition, according to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the bathing waters in Saxony are in excellent or good condition.
