The Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) plans to support 49 film and media projects with almost seven million euros. "The projects in the current funding round, with their wide range of films and topics, once again demonstrate the diversity of Central Germany as a media and production location," announced the MDM.
The highest individual funding of 750,000 euros is to go to Ostlicht Filmproduktion from Weimar. The coming-of-age film by Markus Dietrich and David Ungureit is about gender identity and first love, among other things.
The Leipzig-based video production service "Oma Inge Film" will receive production funding of 500,000 euros for the drama "Mala". The project marks the feature film debut of Leipzig-based author and director Lou Wildemann. It tells the story of 29-year-old Mila, who functions in everyday life but has come to terms with herself and life.
The drama "Fatherland" by Oscar winner Pawel Pawlikowski is also to be funded with 500,000 euros. In it, Thomas Mann travels back to Germany for the first time in the summer of 1949 with his daughter Erika, where he is due to give a speech in Frankfurt and Weimar to mark Goethe's 200th birthday. The production with the Thuringian-born actress Sandra Hüller, Devid Striesow and August Diehl is being made by Edward Berger's company "Nine Hours". Pawlikowski co-wrote the screenplay with Henk Handloegten, known for the hit series "Babylon Berlin".
