The Bundesliga handball team SC DHfK Leipzig said goodbye to their fans with an embarrassing performance. In the last home game of the season, the team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson lost 25:34 (9:18) to relegation-threatened SG BBM Bietigheim. Andri Runarsson was the best scorer in front of 4,581 spectators with seven goals for Leipzig, who slipped to 13th place with 21:45 points. Bietigheim moved out of the relegation places with the win.
Despite the defeat, the home fans cheered once again 27 seconds before the end when Luca Witzke left the court. After six years in Leipzig, the international will move to league rivals SG Flensburg-Handewitt for the coming season and was bid farewell to great applause.
Leipzig disappointed across the board
The home side got off to the best possible start and led 2:0 after just 70 seconds, but the visitors countered with five goals in succession and dominated the first half from then on. Leipzig was frighteningly sluggish in attack and made eleven technical mistakes up to the break, which the underdogs consistently punished on the break. In addition, the home side was unable to find a way to counter Bietigheim's play from the circle.
Even after the break, Leipzig did not put up a fight at first. Instead, the visitors extended their lead to 21:9 in the 36th minute. Although Sigtryggsson's players improved significantly in attack after that, Bietigheim remained in control at all times and deserved to win by a deserved margin.
