The Bundesliga handball team SC DHfK Leipzig also impressed in their second home game of the season. The team of coach Runar Sigtryggsson defeated VfL Gummersbach 34:29 (17:11) in front of a home crowd. In front of 4321 spectators, national team players Luca Witzke and Franz Semper were SC DHfK's best scorers with nine goals each.
Even without Viggo Kristjansson, who was suffering from thigh problems, Leipzig immediately got into the game in offense and developed a lot of drive on goal. The hosts were not deterred by a brief period of weakness. Leipzig succeeded excellently in preventing VfL from playing at pace. In the positional attack, the visitors had great difficulty creating chances against Leipzig's 5:1 defense. Although SC DHfK lost its playful line a little as a result, it was able to rely on the shooting power of Franz Semper and the increasingly strong goalkeeper Kristian Säveras, who saved nine shots by the break.
National player injured
In the second half, Gummersbach stepped up the pace in its actions, but was not able to close the gap decisively because Leipzig was also able to maintain its high level in offense. VfL's hopes of catching up were dampened further in the 44th minute when international Julian Köster injured his knee in an unfortunate duel with Moritz Preuss and was unable to continue.
The home side controlled the encounter and already looked like a sure winner after Matej Klima's goal to make it 29:21 in the 50th minute. Gummersbach refused to give in and threw SC DHfK off its stride with its offensive cover. The visitors reduced the deficit to 28:30 in the 56th minute before Leipzig put an end to the trembling with four goals in succession.
