The Bundesliga handball club Thüringer HC has started the group stage of the European League with a defeat. The defending champions lost 34:36 (15:16) at Hungarian first-division club Motherson Mosonmagyaróvár on Sunday afternoon. Johanna Reichert was the THC's best scorer with 16 goals.
The team of Head Coach Herbert Müller struggled to get into the game and missed many chances in the opening spell. The Thuringians stabilized in attack midway through the first half, but revealed big gaps in defense and so fell behind by the break.
The pace picked up on both sides after the break. The absence of Anika Niederwieser and Josefine Hanfland in the middle block was painfully noticeable for the THC. Although the outstanding Reichert kept her team in the game for a long time, the Hungarians pulled away to 35:32 (57th minute) in the final phase.
