175th episode of "Auf ein Glas" with bottle tasting from Saxony to Sylt, Rügen and Usedom: Bacchus, Donauriesling, Souvignier Gris and a Piwi cuvée as a highlight.

For the 175th episode of "Auf ein Glas", we only have bottles as guests - but an interesting selection! We start the bottle tasting with two wines that Matthias Gräfe made together with winemakers (more correctly: a female winemaker and a male winemaker) - both come from the growing region of Saxony, albeit from two federal states... Then we head north to the island of Sylt and then we head over to the east, but stick to island hopping: we taste wines from Rügen and Usedom and talk a lot more about Piwis than Matthias (quote: "I don't like Piwis!") could ever have imagined. The fact that one of the three island wines was named "Highlight of the day!" is almost sensational in this respect - especially as it is a cuvée made from seven Piwis...

    11 % Alc - a good summer wine!
  • [18:19] Wanderwein vom Weingut Hanke
    Podcast about Hanke
German wine - why not country wine? It's because of the grape variety!
Donauriesling! Eva Vollmer has had it before - from Austria (approx. minute 59 here)
the wine for vineyard tours - in the vineyard there's the right food to go with the wine
searched for: something with drinking flow and substance. Found: Donauriesling
  • [33:3] off north to the islands!
    we're on Sylt!
Söllvin - a Solaris ("awesome blending partner")
the much-quoted northernmost vineyard in Germany - on Sylt!
Vineyards are also called vineyards if they are flat vineyards
the question is: why do we need this?
  • [40:54] we stay Nordic by nature ...
we go to the other northernmost vineyard - the one in the east: on Rügen
Usedom then has the north-easternmost vineyard ...
Souvignier Gris - is the only variety in cultivation at Weingut Hohmann, Rügen
they have it vinified on the Moselle (at Apel in Nittel)
they make this wine - and a sparkling wine: classic bottle fermentation, 36 months yeast storage
more interesting than some wines from the Elbe Valley, not so smoothly ironed
  • [48:08] Weingut Welzin
    2023 witt
the Gräfe forecast as soon as the bottle was opened: this will be the highlight of the day!
seven Piwi varieties as a mixed set: Muscaris, Solaris, Rinot, Sauvignac, Ravel Blanc, Soreli and Fleurtai
first impressions: Appearance, first smell - all fine!
Interesting and delicious: frowned upon terms, but they hit the spot!
It would go well with roasted asparagus too!
    That's really something else!
Natural wine is no longer a dirty word!
    End of work!
