Fruit growers in Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt are worried about the upcoming frost night. The cherry trees are in full bloom and are extremely sensitive to sub-zero temperatures, said Carmen Stefanie Kaps from the fruit growers' association in both states.
Where possible, attempts are being made to protect the blossoms with warming fires or frost protection irrigation. However, the fires are expensive and a lot of water is needed for irrigation, explained Kaps, "You have to let it rain all night long and on several hectares."
According to the German Weather Service, frost is possible in some areas on Wednesday night. Winegrowers in Saxony's Elbe Valley had announced that they would protect their vines from sub-zero temperatures with fires. Fruit growers and allotment gardeners still have bad memories of spring 2024, when several nights of frost largely ruined the fruit harvest in orchards and gardens.
