Bird flu has broken out in domestic poultry in Vogtland. The H5N1 virus was detected on a farm with 115 geese and 69 ducks, according to the district administration. Many of the geese died. Further animals are now being killed as a precautionary measure to prevent the virus from spreading. The authorities did not specify the exact number in their announcement.
Poultry must be kept indoors in some places in the district, it said. This applies to parts of the municipalities of Muldenhammer, Klingenthal, Schöneck, Grünbach, Werda, Neustadt, Bergen, Falkenstein, Ellefeld, Rodewisch and Auerbach. In addition, poultry farmers throughout the district were called upon to take protective measures against avian influenza.
After an outbreak in the Saalekreis district in Saxony-Anhalt, parts of northern Saxony were recently affected by special protective measures. The animal disease information system of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute reported four active cases of bird flu in Germany on Friday - not including the outbreak in Vogtland.
