Easter is just around the corner - and blood donations are urgently needed. There are therefore additional appointments at the German Red Cross (DRK) Blood Donation Service North-East on Saturday.

In order to ensure the supply of blood reserves over Easter, the DRK Blood Donor Service North-East is offering additional donation appointments on Holy Saturday (April 4). Appointments can be made online or via the free telephone hotline 0800 11 949 11, according to a press release. The Blood Transfusion Service North-East includes the federal states of Saxony, Brandenburg, Berlin, Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg.

Blood donations are indispensable for everyday clinical practice and exceptional stress situations. Many serious illnesses, for example, can only be treated by administering blood products. "In Saxony alone, around 650 blood donations are needed every working day to ensure patient care."

How does the donation process work?

Before the appointment, the donor should drink plenty of fluids, explained the DRK Blood Donor Service North-East. On site, the identity card must be shown and the medical questionnaire completed. After a brief consultation with a doctor and a small laboratory check, the donation can begin.

According to the information provided, around half a liter of blood is taken, which takes around 8 to 12 minutes. This is followed by a rest break and a snack. A total of around 45 minutes should be planned.
