Hertha BSC secured a win in the first test match of the new year. The team coached by Pal Dardai won 2-0 (0-0) against third-tier FC Erzgebirge Aue in Berlin on Saturday. The goals were scored by Florian Niederlechner (71st/82nd minute).
There were not many chances at first in the game at the amateur stadium. Haris Tabakovic headed a ball just wide of the visitors' goal at the start, while an attempt from Aue's Maximilian Thiel hit the crossbar shortly before the break. Niederlechner finally took the lead after a quick counter-attack, and eleven minutes later he also scored Hertha's second goal.
This Sunday, Hertha travel to the training camp in Alicante. The relegated Bundesliga side will play two more test matches in Spain. On Wednesday against KV Mechelen from Belgium and on Saturday next week against Glasgow Rangers from Scotland. In the league, Hertha will start the new year on January 21 with a home match against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Berlin are seventh in the table after the first half of the season.
