European comeback fixed: Leipzig now wants to make it to the premier class

RB Leipzig has achieved its first goal of the season by returning to international competition. A young professional is the big trump card in the battle for the Champions League.

There were no congratulations from "lucky charm" Jürgen Klopp for the RB Leipzig professionals after their prematurely perfect return to Europe's soccer stage. "Of course we're happy when he's there and supports us. But he doesn't always have to speak to us. We have a coach and a sports director for that," reported Christoph Baumgartner following the acclaimed 3:1 (1:1) win at Eintracht Frankfurt.

With the first Bundesliga win in the club's history in Frankfurt under Klopp's watchful eye, the Saxons punched their ticket to an international competition with four matchdays to go before the end of the season. But if RB coach Ole Werner has his way, this should not be the last word from the reinvigorated Leipzig side: "It's good that we're back in Europe. Now we want more!"

In other words, the Saxons are fired up for the top flight. "We're in the race for the Champions League places and haven't finished yet," said Werner. His team has already collected 59 points and is five points ahead of fifth-placed TSG Hoffenheim with four games remaining.

Strong performance in Frankfurt gives courage

The performance in Frankfurt, where Leipzig had never won in nine previous Bundesliga attempts, looked mature. "That was a very mature performance from us. If we keep playing like that, we won't even have to look at the competition," said winger Ridle Baku.

In front of 58,500 spectators, Yan Diomande (27th minute), Antonio Nusa (70th) and Conrad Harder (81st) scored for the visitors, who despite the absence of defensive stalwarts David Raum, Willi Orban and Xaver Schlager only conceded an equalizer through Hugo Larsson (34th).

"The energy the team brought to the pitch today was sensational. So I can only take my hat off to my team. It makes me proud how the lads work and stick together," said Werner, praising his charges.

Leipzig are aiming for higher things

They got off to the worst possible start to the season in August last year with a 6-0 defeat in Munich following a personnel shake-up during the summer break. Eight months later, RB has matured into a top team with higher ambitions for the future.

"Of course we want to play for the German championship. But we are also very realistic and know what the market looks like in Germany and that Bayern Munich is an absolute dominator. But you have to have this ambition, you have to set yourself these goals. And I would be happy to give us less than five years to achieve them," said RB boss Tatjana Haenni.

How much longer will Diomande continue to play for RB?

It is doubtful whether striker Diomande will continue to score goals for Leipzig. The 19-year-old Ivorian, who will face the DFB team with Côte d'Ivoire in the preliminary round of the World Cup, is unlikely to be retained in the long term. The high-flyer has already scored twelve goals this season.

"He's almost unstoppable when he picks up pace. He has a good understanding of soccer and knows where spaces open up for him. He doesn't even need to use many feints," said Werner, describing the attacker's strengths. And Baku conceded: "We're happy to have him in our own ranks and not have to defend against him. He is our difference-maker."

Diomande himself remained modest. "I try to improve every day in training. I'm happy for myself and for the team that things are going so well for me," said Diomande, looking ahead to the final spurt with confidence: "Now I want to bring the season to a successful conclusion."
