RB Leipzig is making plans for David Raum's future. The Bundesliga club wants to prevent its captain from leaving the club next summer without a transfer fee. Since Raum’s contract expires then, talks about a possible extension are set to begin as early as September.

Sports director Marcel Schäfer confirmed that discussions with the 28-year-old and his agent are imminent. “There will certainly be discussions with David and his agent. The goal is to extend his contract; I’ve emphasized that several times already. But as you know, it always takes three parties,” Schäfer explained. In doing so, he made it clear that, in addition to the club and the player, his agent also plays an important role in the negotiations.

Progress After a Difficult Start

Raum completed his move to Leipzig in the summer of 2022. RB paid TSG Hoffenheim approximately 26 million euros for the fullback. However, his start at his new club did not go as hoped. In his first season, the then-newcomer was unable to secure a regular spot and started only 19 times.

Raum didn’t gain more stability until after Marcel Halstenberg’s departure. As a result, he was able to solidify his role at RB and establish himself as a key option on the left side of the defense over the long term.

Now Leipzig faces the task of securing its continued partnership with its captain. The upcoming talks with Raum and his agent are therefore likely to be decisive in determining whether the 28-year-old will continue to wear the Saxony team’s jersey beyond next summer.

Champions League as an Additional Factor

The club’s on-field development also plays a key role in RB Leipzig’s long-term planning. After a season without European competition, Leipzig has qualified for the Champions League once again by finishing third in the Bundesliga. For Raum, this means he’ll be able to play on Europe’s biggest stage again with RB next season. Under new coach Martín Demichelis, the left-back remains a key part of the team and has once again been named captain.
