From the Elbe to the Spree on two wheels: New signs make the route through the Lusatian Lakeland and the Spreewald easier to find.

Cycling from Dresden to Berlin - a new route makes this possible: the 250-kilometre route leads from the Frauenkirche in Dresden via the Lusatian Lakeland and the Spreewald to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

Signposts are now being installed to make it easier for cyclists to find the route along the way. According to the ADFC cycling club, there are now around 20 of them in the Dresden city area. Over the course of the year, more signs will follow in the district of Meißen and on the Brandenburg side.

Quiet route away from major roads

"The Berlin-Dresden cycle route is totally attractive for tourists," advertised the chairman of the ADFC Saxony, Janek Mücksch. It leads along quiet paths, mostly away from roads, has very few cars and is therefore pleasant to ride. If you are a sporty cyclist, you can complete the route in two days. Mücksch recommends that families plan a week for the cycle tour. Overnight stays are possible at numerous bike-friendly accommodations along the route.

Route developed on a voluntary basis

The initiative for the cycle route came from ADFC Dresden in 2012. Members developed it on a voluntary basis. For the most part, it follows existing routes such as the Dahme and Spree cycle paths. The ADFC provides information material. If you only want to cycle part of the route, you can change trains at many stations along the way.

The project is now part of the strategic cycle traffic planning in Saxony. "We want to further develop cycle tourism in the Free State of Saxony," said Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) when installing a sign in Dresden-Neustadt.

However, the construction of new cycle paths is a lengthy process. It therefore makes sense to connect existing routes, as is the case here. According to the state tourism association, cyclists generate more than 560 million euros in revenue in Saxony every year - and secure around 10,800 jobs.
