The suspected case of bird flu at Leipzig Zoo has been confirmed. The zoo announced on its website that a dead Dalmatian pelican is affected. There have been no other deaths or evidence of bird flu so far. In a concerted action, around 250 animals from the bird population were examined and samples taken at the weekend.
Some areas of the zoo are closed
"The test results are expected in the coming days. Until the results are available, the Flamingo Lagoon, Pongoland and Gondwanaland will remain closed to visitors," the zoo added. The zoo is in close contact with the authorities and is implementing strict hygiene measures on a daily basis to avoid potential infection routes.
Guests can still visit many areas, including the aquarium and the new terrarium, the koala house and the extensive outdoor facilities. "Special highlights during the day also include feedings and commentary, for example with the big cats, sea lion training or elephant bathing," it said.
