Due to the high risk of forest fires, only diesel locomotives have been running on the Brocken recently. Now travelers can look forward to steam locomotives again.

The Harz narrow-gauge railroads will be sending steam locomotives up the Brocken again from Thursday (26.6.). The forest fire danger level has been lowered, the company announced. The regular timetable on the Brocken Railway will then apply again, with eight pairs of trains a day to the highest peak and back. Train services had recently been switched to diesel locomotives because the official forest fire danger level was 4. Steam locomotives are considered more dangerous than diesel locomotives in times of forest fires because they emit significantly more sparks and hot ash particles.
