"Rotkäppchen" sees itself as a pioneer and wants to continue to grow thanks to the trend. For others, the products are more of an addition to the existing range.

Alcohol-free wines remain a niche for East German winegrowers despite the growing market. The Rotkäppchen-Mumm sparkling wine cellars in Freyburg want to continue to grow thanks to corresponding offers. According to the company, the East German sparkling wine brand "Rotkäppchen" has also been available non-alcoholic since 2008. "Alcohol-free is a key lever for further growth for us," Managing Director Silvia Wiesner told the German Press Agency. The company is now the market leader in non-alcoholic sparkling wines. The company did not comment on the share of total sales accounted for by these varieties.

The Saxon state winery Schloss Wackerbarth has been offering a non-alcoholic sparkling wine in the premium segment since last year. According to press spokesman Martin Junge, it took a long time to achieve the desired taste.

The Freyburg Winegrowers' Association is more sceptical: Managing Director Hartmut Schreiter puts the brakes on expectations that alcohol-free wines could become mass business. "We absolutely see this as a complementary product." Around three percent of the wine sold by the winegrowers' association is attributable to the two non-alcoholic varieties in the range.

According to the German Wine Institute, sales and turnover of non-alcoholic wines grew by 25 percent last year. The share of total wine sales is around two percent. At the same time, consumption of alcoholic wines continued to fall. Sparkling wine, on the other hand, was consumed almost as much as in the previous year.
