The unusually dry weather is leading to low water levels in the Elbe. A section between Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt is particularly affected.

According to the Federal Institute of Hydrology (BfG), the widespread drought in May is leading to falling water levels in federal waterways. As no heavy rain is expected in the next few days, the low water situation will continue to worsen across Germany, according to a report by the BfG.

The water levels are unusually low for this time of year, although not yet at an extreme level. However, the Elbe and Danube are already acutely affected by low water levels.

According to data from the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV), water levels are currently low, especially at some gauges in the middle reaches of the Elbe between Riesa (Saxony) and Aken (Saxony-Anhalt). Forecasts also continue to show a downward trend, as no significant amounts of precipitation are expected for the major rivers.
