Despite crises and price jumps, the gas price for EnviaM customers remains stable for the time being - but new customers are hit harder. This is what's behind it.

Despite the crisis in the Middle East and the sharp rise in exchange prices, EnviaM customers do not have to expect higher gas costs for the time being. "We will keep prices as stable as possible and for as long as possible," said Chief Sales Officer Wolfgang Wirtnik. Gas is purchased up to three years in advance in order to hedge against price rises.

The situation is different for new customers for whom gas has to be procured at short notice, explained Wirtnik. They currently have to expect prices to be 10 to 15 percent higher.

"Connection boom" in the electricity grid - data centers set up shop

EnviaM supplies around 1.1 million customers in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Thuringia with electricity, gas, heat and high-speed Internet. Significantly more gas was sold in 2025: 8,450 gigawatt hours (2024: 7,300 GWh). In contrast, the volume of electricity fell significantly from 7,803 to 6,717 gigawatt hours. According to CEO Stephan Lowis, this was mainly due to the resale of electricity to redistributors such as municipal utilities.

All in all, there was a "connection boom" in the electricity grid in the EnviaM region, said Lowis. Every day, the subsidiary Mitnetz received more than 100 inquiries about grid connections - as many as a few years ago (2018/2019) per month. "This ranges from small photovoltaic systems on the roof to large data centers."

Lots of green electricity - heat transition lags behind

There are a number of inquiries from large consumers, for example for data centers and industrial plants. Specifically, Lowis mentioned the relocation of two large data centers by Amazon and the Schwarz Group. There are concrete negotiations for four other major projects as well as for new connections for major customers and industrial areas. An important plus is the high availability of renewable energy. Significantly more green electricity is fed into the grid area than is consumed. Lowis: "That is a clear locational advantage."

EnviaM also generates its own electricity. More than half of this (59%) now comes from renewable sources such as hydropower, wind and solar power. The situation is different when it comes to heat supply - here the switch is lagging far behind with a share of just 18%.

Network operator braces itself for possible attacks

To ensure that the energy networks keep pace with growing demands and advancing digitalization, the company will continue to invest heavily in the coming years - around 600 million euros this year alone. At the same time, the Group is arming itself for a wide range of threats. Suspected left-wing extremist arson attacks in September and January in Berlin showed that energy networks can be the target of attacks. In both cases, tens of thousands of households were affected, sometimes for several days. "We are preparing for everything," emphasized IT Director Sigrid Nagl. The main focus is on protecting critical points in the network.
