The end is slowly in sight for the expansion of the Autobahn 72 between Leipzig and Chemnitz. According to a spokeswoman for Autobahn GmbH, the road towards Chemnitz from the Leipzig junction to the Zwenkau junction should be open to traffic for the first time this summer. This is the final construction phase. Until now, traffic to Chemnitz has been running in two temporary lanes on the Leipzig-bound carriageway.
According to Autobahn GmbH, the construction work is going according to plan - the official closure of the gap to the A38 with both lanes and all lanes is scheduled for 2026. However, some remaining work will still be necessary. Among other things, a specific noise protection asphalt must then be applied.
The 162-kilometre-long freeway link from the Bavarian Vogtland region via Chemnitz to Leipzig has been built piece by piece since 2003. The last section before Rötha in the district of Leipzig to the A38 south of Leipzig was particularly complex because a large part of the route runs over brown coal dumps. The ground had to be extensively compacted for the highway construction.
