Partial ban on Dynamo fans for the match against Darmstadt

The serious disturbances during the Dresden vs. Hertha match will be met with harsh penalties. The DFB Federal Court has upheld the previous ruling. Here’s what that means for the first home game.

Dynamo Dresden will have to play without some of its fans in its first home game of the 2. Bundesliga season on August 16 against SV Darmstadt 98. The German Football Association’s (DFB) Federal Court has rejected the Saxon club’s appeal against a ruling by the DFB Sports Court dated June 5. As a result, the sanctions imposed due to the riots by Dynamo supporters during the match against Hertha BSC remain in effect.

Dynamo Dresden immediately announced that it would review the ruling in its entirety and is considering further steps.

Serious riots during the match against Hertha BSC on April 4

The proceedings were based on the incidents that occurred during the match between Dynamo and Hertha BSC (0–1) on April 4. A total of 27 pyrotechnic devices were set off in the Dresden fan section. After significant clashes had previously broken out between supporters of both clubs as well as security and crowd control personnel, at least 77 Dresden supporters from the K-Block area crossed the boundary into the field of play and ran across the field toward the visitors’ section. 

“Interference with the Match”

During this incident, Bengal flares and fireworks were deliberately fired at Berlin fans and toward the visitors’ section. The game had to be suspended for 19 minutes. A total of at least 17 people were injured.

“Firing fireworks at people is completely unacceptable. Likewise, the mass invasion of the field, which makes it impossible to continue the match, constitutes an interference with the competition that must be prevented under all circumstances,” said Oskar Riedmeyer, chairman of the DFB Federal Court, in his ruling.

DFB Sports Court Imposed Harsh Penalties on Both Teams

Hertha was fined 152,000 euros by the DFB Sports Court, while Dynamo must pay 91,200 euros. In addition, fans will be partially barred from the next two Dynamo home games. The second match, however, has been suspended on probation until summer 2027. Furthermore, both teams must develop a joint security plan for upcoming matches and reduce the number of visiting fans allowed.

Dresden viewed the partial ban on spectators as a collective punishment and had filed an appeal against it. However, the Saxons’ arguments failed to convince the Sports Court, just as they have now failed to convince the Federal Court.
