Aue (dpa/bb) - On the 54th birthday of its coach Steffen Baumgart, Bundesliga club Union Berlin won the XXL test against Erzgebirge Aue 2:1 (2:0). The game in front of 2,332 spectators at the Erzgebirgsstadion, including around 200 Union fans, was played over two 60-minute periods.
The goals for the visitors were scored by Aljoscha Kemlein (9th minute) and Oliver Burke (54th). In addition, Leopold Querfeld (28) and Kemlein (57) both hit the post. Aue also had a few chances during the game in minus eight degrees Celsius. After Julian Günther-Schmidt failed to beat goalkeeper Matheo Raab, for example, Maximilian Schmid was able to reduce the deficit to 1:2 in the 108th minute.
Premiere for Aue's new sporting director
The Union victory was well deserved overall. Both teams made plenty of changes during the match. Union were missing the injured players Tom Rothe, Robert Skov and Dmytro Bohdanow as well as midfielder Rani Khedira, who was ill.
For the capital side, it was a dress rehearsal for their next Bundesliga match on Saturday (3.30pm) against 1. FSV Mainz 05. Aue do not have to play again until January 17 at Hansa Rostock. It was former international Michael Tarnat's first match as sporting director of the Saxons.
