Winter weather causes blood shortage at Leipzig University Hospital

The blood bank at Leipzig University Hospital (UKL) is urgently requesting blood donations. The persistent winter weather conditions are affecting both the willingness to donate and the organization of blood donation appointments, according to a statement from the hospital.

The stocks of life-saving blood products have therefore fallen significantly in recent weeks - there is currently a particular shortage of blood products of blood group 0 Rhesus positive. "Normally, donation services throughout Germany support each other when there are shortages. This is currently not possible because there is a shortage everywhere. We therefore have to pull ourselves out of this crisis situation using our own resources," emphasized Prof. Reinhard Henschler, Director of the Institute of Transfusion Medicine at the UKL.
